Vernon L. Cunningham Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Vernon Latham Cunningham, age 89 of Portage, IN passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2022 in Hobart, IN. He was born on August 22, 1932 in Luxora, AR to Herschel and Nokle (Berry) Cunningham. Vernon is survived by his daughter, Gail Talley; sons, James Cunningham, Scott (Shari) Cunningham; step-daughters, Danette Moran, Sharon Moran; grandsons, Jacob (Danae) Cunningham, Nate Cunningham; granddaughters, Kaitlyn (Jim) Field, Jillian (Maverick) Miller, Julia Cunningham; step-grandson, Drake Robinson; step-granddaughter, Grace Robinson; great-granddaughters, Emily, Riley, Natalie, Gwendolyn. He was preceded in death by his father, Herschel Cunningham; mother, Nokle Cunningham; first wife, Peggy Cunningham; second wife, Loretta Moran; sister, Martha (Elvis "Short") Easley; son-in-law, Randy Talley. Vernon served in the Korean War from 1951 through 1953 with the third military police company third infantry division. He married Peggy Joyce on July 25, 1955. Vernon worked at U.S. Steel Tin Mill, where he formed many lifelong friends. He then retired to be the caretaker for his wife until she passed. Vernon then partnered to create County Line Landscaping and helped make Portage beautiful. His next venture was as a landlord where he bought and rented out many commercial and residential properties. Vernon loved to celebrate the holidays with his friends and family, especially his birthday which he considered a legal holiday. His hobby has always been antique cars and antique John Deere tractors. Vernon has many that he has restored and loved to share with his kids and grandkids. He was a true gentleman and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 8, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Avenue, Portage, IN 46368. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022 from 12:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Vernon's honor may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.
