March 7, 1928 - January 13, 2022
Richard W. Dommer, age 93 of Chesterton, IN passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022. He was born on March 7, 1928, in East Chicago, North Township, IN to Harry Walgreen and Louise (Hill) Dommer. Richard (Dick) is survived by two daughters, Dr. Kathleen Dommer, Karen Martin; grandchildren, Symone Bell, Solomon Bell, Carrie Skeens, Angela Kochan, Keith Martin, Solonna Dommer, Nicole Allison, Cassie Parker; great grandchildren, Carlee Martin, Jonathan Schenck, Alex Schenck, Morgan Kochan, Avan Kochan, Haley Martin, Cynthia Allison; great, great grandchildren, Kenna Dingess, Deklin Dingess; and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise, and Paul Dommer; his wife, Patricia Dommer; and two sons, Joseph Dommer, and Jon Dommer. Dick began work at a young age on his maternal grandparents’ farm. In 1945, at 17, he entered a job with the Department of Transportation in the Merchant Marines, shipping out of the Naples Italy port. Dick was the “go to guy” or messman. Later, he would join the Army learning the trade of mechanics. This trade would continue in his life as he managed trucking firms and after retiring drove semitrucks for Bell’s Motor Lines. Dick was known as being active, dependable, and determined. He was a self-taught musician who played in bands with Roger Dore throughout his years up through his 80’s. Dick’s last band was known as the “Silver Tops” with friend, Bob Betts. Dick enjoyed motorcycles and continued the mechanic’s trade as a hobby where he supported his family by working hard and bartering. Dick would fix cars and if people didn’t have money, people paid in valuables such as musical instruments, or trailers. After moving with his wife from 2nd street to Strongbow Trail to Wabash Avenue, Dick and Patricia lived their remaining lives. Dick loved the outdoors; he would sit in the sun, work in the garden, or walk on the beach. Dick was known for his hardy laugh, loved talking to people and had a good sense of humor. Whether talking to people at the Northside Diner or on his daily walks. Even a month before his death, while in a dining room, and getting a kiss from his daughter, Dick yells “I’m the kissing bandit.” Everyone in the dining room broke up in laughter. Richard's family will have a Celebration of his Life in February 2022. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be in Richard’s honor to Sharing Meadows, The SHARE Foundation, PO Box 400, Rolling Prairie, IN 46371. Attn: Fr. Dennis Blaney.
