Phyllis Dawson

May 16, 1939 - March 20, 2022

Phyllis Ann (Fryhover) Dawson, age 82, of Kouts, Indiana, passed away from natural causes on Sunday, March 20, 2022, in the comfort of her home with her loving husband, Bob. Phyllis was born in her grandmother’s home in LaGrange, Indiana, on May 16, 1939, the daughter of Irene V. (Schmidt) Fryhover and Harold W. Fryhover. She raised three fabulous children, Dawn, Greg, and Beth. Phyllis graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1957. She began her career at Anderson Insurance (formerly Claudon & Anderson Insurance Agency), worked for the Valparaiso school system for some time and returned to Anderson Insurance until her retirement. Her first marriage was to Cassie LeRoy Hunt on September 19, 1959. On December 29, 2001, she married Robert “Bob” Dawson. Phyllis loved to read, bicycle, hike, and travel to visit her children. She was a tremendous cyclist, even biking 6,600 miles when she was 73 years old. She completed Ride Across Indiana (RAIN) 162 miles in one day five times and was an officer of the Calumet Crank Club. In 2002, she climbed all 96 floors up the John Hancock tower as part of a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. At age 76, she and Bob hiked the Grand Canyon, rim to rim. For the last 27 years, Phyllis shared her life with her beloved husband, Bob, as they enjoyed biking, hiking, camping in their trailer and BEING HAPPY. Phyllis touched the lives of many, and her friends will forever hold her memory in their hearts. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, Irene V. and Harold W. Fryhover, brother Lee Allen Fryhover, sister-in-law Donna (Floyd) Titus, and grandson Brandon Hunt. Phyllis is survived by her beloved husband; Robert Dawson, children; Dawn Hunt, Greg (Leah) Hunt, Beth Hunt and Dawn Dawson, sister-in-law; Carie (Stringham) Fryhover, nephew; Cord (Marcia) Hernandez and their son Asher, grandchildren; Gregory Hunt, Jennifer (Jakki) Joubicks, Seth Joubert, Joshua Hunt and Lucas Hunt, father of her children; Cassie Hunt, and Zorro the cat. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304.
