September 3, 1920 - May 1, 2021
Mary M. (Spitler) Messina, age 100 of Chesterton, IN passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021 in Wheaton, IL. She was born on September 3, 1920 in Iroquois, IL to Herbert and Clair (Hitchings) Spitler. Mary is survived by her son, Martin (Tamara) Messina of Chesterton, IN; daughters, Sandra Messina of Las Vegas, NV, Cynthia (Jack) Heilingoetter of Aurora, IL, Donna (Brian) Messina-Test of Aurora, IL; grandchildren Phillip, Douglas, Christopher, and Jennifer Miller; Melissa McLean Shuler, Sarah Croft, Allyson Brenna, Parker Test; great-grandchildren, Will Radley, Faith Miller, Emma Grytoyr; Nadia and Sarina McLean; Seth, Sage, Skye Croft; Hailey and Owen Brenna. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Messina; sister, Pauline Joyce; father, Herbert Vernon Spitler; mother, Clair Spitler; sister-in-law, Dorothy Krushinski. Mary will be remembered for her talents in sewing dresses for her “girls” and granddaughters, crafting flip-flop dolls, clowns, and holiday banners and ornaments. She will be appreciated for her cooking and baking creations-chicken and noodles, Italian beef, potato salad, sugar cookies, fudge, popcorn balls, and caramel apples. Mary loved traveling, especially to experience the majesty of the Rockies, the autumn foliage displayed in the Northeast, and all the points of interest that define our country. She enjoyed hosting Bunco nights with the gals in Merrillville, and weekly bowling and card games with the Chesterton crew. Mary always looked forward to the annual outings to Shafer Lake, Nappanee, the Little Traveler, and Marshall Fields on State Street. Free time was spent devouring the novels of Beverly Lewis, working the daily crossword puzzles, playing epic games of Canasta and Scrabble. She enjoyed listening to and singing along with the tunes and rhythms of Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Count Basie, Stan Getz, Boots Randolph, and searching for the “perfect” purse and home decorations during day-long shopping expeditions. Mary loved laughing to the antics of The Pink Panther, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Andy Griffith Show, and MASH. The common threads running throughout the life of our dearly beloved mother are the unconditional bonds of love she felt for family and friends. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN. Memorial may be made directly to DuPage Care Center Foundation, 400 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL 60187. Arrangement entrusted to Edmonds & Evans Funeral and Cremation Services. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.ee-fh.com.
