Deborah L. Sobat Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Deborah Lynne Sobat, age 59 of Portage, Indiana passed away on Wednesday June 29, 2022 at home with her loved ones at bedside. She was born December 27, 1962 in Gary, Indiana to Howard and Barbara (Cardwell) Schoonover. Deborah is survived by her loving spouse of 40 years, Dennis Sobat, mother Barbara (Jerry) Skiba, Niece Brittany (Nate) Smith, Nephew Brendan Gill, and Great-nieces Remington and Ellington. She was preceded in death by her father Howard Schoonover, Sister Sheryl (Schoonover) Gill, Brother Michael Schoonover, Father and Mother-in-law Eli and Evelyn (Hipp) Sobat, and Grandparents Harold and Stella (Lindsey) Lind and Roy and Dorothy (Hollenbaugh) Schoonover. Deborah graduated Portage High School in 1980 and was a longtime Portage resident. Debbie was an avid golf player and spent many Sundays golfing with her spouse Dennis and friends Linda and Gus. She also enjoyed playing in the women’s league with her Duck Creek girls and in the annual Rally for the Cure Breast Cancer Golf Benefit. Family and friends were everything to her. Everyone who met her knew instantly how much she loved her family. She was always telling anyone who would listen how proud of her niece Brittany and nephew Brendan she was. If she was not on the golf course, you would find her with her pride & joy, her great-nieces Remi & Elli. Better known to them as “Ghazi,” she would light up at even the mention of their names. Her smile was infectious and lit up a room. She was a fighter and would always have the most positive attitude even on her toughest days. She will be missed by many. A celebration of life will be held on July 13, 2022 from 3-7pm at Edmond and Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Avenue, Portage, IN 46368. Pastor Duane Schmidt to perform service at 7pm. A private burial with family to be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in Deborah’s honor may be made to Rally for a Cure, 2 N. Guyer St, Hobart, IN 46342.
