Charles W. Dawson

June 15, 1938 - May 25, 2022

Charles W. Dawson (Pops) 83 of Portage, Indiana passed away in his home with his wife by his side on May 25th, 2022. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ricky L (Hyland) Dawson; sons, Lance C Dawson (Rhonda Mercaldo), Jason E Dawson; granddaughter, Alixzandrea Bigheart; brother, Bruce Dawson. He was proceeded in death by his parents; Daughter, Kimberly Ann Dawson and brother, John Dawson. Charles was born June 15, 1938 in Brighton, South Dakota to Charles L. Dawson and Bernice Dawson (Benzel). They traveled to Santa Rosa, Texas until they found their home in Portage, IN where he graduated from Portage High School class of 1956. While at PHS he played basketball, football, and baseball, where he was asked to try out with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a pitcher. Charles worked at United States Steel for 42 years at the 160/210 plate mill. He had many hobbies/activities that he was involved in throughout the years. Some of the many things he was involved in were the National Ski Patrol (Pines Ski Lodge), Go-Kart racing (Enduro Karts) B-Reed and C-Stock, bowling, and his favorite by far Golf. Charles belonged to Chesterton Moose Lodge 1623, Dunes Lodge 741 (Masonic Lodge), Scottish Rite, NRA. He was a little league coach at Portage, YABA coach at Camelot, football coach (Jason), Golf Coach (Lance), and just a mentor and all-around nice guy for so many people. Charles was loved by so many and will be missed by all. He was the best husband and father that anyone of us could ever ask for. A celebration of life is set for Friday, July 29, 2022 from 5-9pm at the Bonner Senior Center, 5800 Lexington Avenue, Portage, Indiana 46368. Funeral Arrangements are being handled by Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home.
